Remorca-cort

Mi-am dat seama, scriind articolul precedent, ca ar trebui sa povestesc putin despre diferite feluri de vehicule recreationale (RV = recreational vehicle, in limba engleza).

Writing the last article I realised that I should tell you a little about different kinds of recreational vehicles.

I want to detail each one of the recreational vehicles’ categories in several articles. Obviously, I will start with the tent-trailer.

Asa arata o remorca-cort fabricata in 1925 in S.U.A. pentru Fordul T:

When the canvas tent became too big and too heavy to be transported with a car, somebody had the idea of putting it on a luggage trailer. There isn’t a precise date when the first tent-trailer was manufactured and there isn’t one person to be “the father” of the tent-trailer. Still, it appears that it began somewhere around 1900. This is how a tent-trailer manufactured in 1925 in the States for the Ford T looks like:

Si europenii au construit astfel de vehicule, un bun exemplu fiind aceasta remorca-cort fabricata in 1935 in Germania, de catre producatorul de articole sportive Hans Berger:

The Europeans also built this kind of vehicles, this tent-trailer made in 1935 in Germany by the sports manufacturer Hans Berger being a good example:

"Sportberger Hausdabei" by Bene16 - Own work.

Used in the second world war, this tent-trailer was named by the German soldiers the “Blitz-zelt”, meaning the “Flash-tent”, thanks to the small amount of time it took for the tent to become fully functional.

Gama de remorci-cort a purtat denumirea Campturist, primul prototip aparand in 1958.

After the second world war, the need for mobility and high technical performances of the automobiles led to the birth of more tent-trailer manufacturers. One of these manufacturers emerged in East Germany, as a part of the group that built the Trabant and Watburg cars, but also the IFA utility vehicles, Barkas and Robur. This range of tent-trailers was called Campturist, the first prototype was built in 1958. This is a photograph of a tent-trailer made in 1964, part of the first commercial model:

O buna parte din productie era exportata in Europa de Vest, sub numele Oase in Germania de Vest, Nimrod in Marea Britanie si Alpenkreuzer in Olanda. Remorca-cort cumparata de noi in vara anului 2007, fabricata in 1986, era impecabila:

Its mechanics were taken from the Tabant , while everything else was manufactured within the factory. A good part of the production was exported to Western europe, as “Oase” in West Germany, “Nimrod” in Great Britain and “Alpenkreuzer” in The Netherlands. The most wanted models were the one belonging to the 6th series, manufactured from mid-’70s to the ‘90s. Having 2 or up to 6 sleeping places, these tent-trailers were very well received by the market, many of them being in a very good condition even today. The tent-trailer we bought in the summer of 2007, manufactured in 1986, was in perfect shape:

After setting up the tent you would get an area of almost 24 sqm, home to two bedroom fro three people, a large living room, a complete kitchen and room for a chemical toilet:

The Maximum Allowed Mass (MAM) of a such trailer is generally of approximatively 500 kg.

After the fall of the Berlin wall, the production continued, with new models, adapted to the period of time, but all of them using the same principle: mechanical components taken from Trabant and the rest of the components made locally or by suppliers. After the production of the Trabant and the Watburg cars ended, all the remaining components were bought by the Dutch company Alpenkreuzer who continued the production of the beloved tent-trailer. The last model of the Alpenkreuzer looked like this:

In 2006 din pacate compania Alpenkreuzer a dat faliment si astfel a disparut unul dintre producatori.

Unfortunately, in 2006 the Alpenkreuzer company went bankrupt and so one of the manufacuturer was gone. But there other tent-trailer manufacturers. One of them is Trigano, who with time became a true giant within the RV world. Trigano’s Galleon looked like this:

www.trigano-trailertents.com

Another tent-trailer manufacturer is Camp-Let, having a history in production of over 40 years, run even today by descendants of its founder, in Denmark. The Clasic model, with four sleeping places and an area of 18 sqm, looks like this:

I have to mention other manufacturers whose products I have admired at the Caravan Salon, in Dusseldorf, like Holtkamper, with this model:

or the completely special model coming from the Dutch company Ysin, reminding us of the famous design of the Sidney Opera:

Arhiva personala

Since I have mentioned the Sidney Opera, I must say that also in Australia there are tent-trailer, build according to their landscape and climate. Most of these tent-trailers are used for trips in places only off-road cars can reach. This is why the tent-trailers made in Australia are also off-road, so they can bear the torture of the Australian routes:
www.conqueroraustralia.com.au

Unfolded, this tent-trailer offers sleeping space for two, numerous storage spaces, a fridge, a stove, fresh water tanks, battery, battery charger, all on an extremely stiff chassis, with an independet suspension and large ground clearance:

www.conqueroraustralia.com.au

As you can see, things have evolved a lot in about 100 years, but the fundamental requests from a tent-trailer have remained the same: reduced weight and volume on the road, space acoording to the necessities, a certain amount of comfort and the possibility to spend free time very close to nature.

A lot of people ask me frequently: what should I buy, a caravan or a motorhome?

And the answer I initially tend to give is: it depends. Even though at first glance it would like an evasive answer, a lot of truth lies in it because every recreational vehicle has its ups and downs. Once you know them, you may decide what fits you best.

I would like to begin with a shirt presentation of each group of RV's (RV = recreational vehicle), so we could later discuss about each of their advantages and disadvantages.

1. A caravan is a towed vehicle, a sort of a box on wheels, having one or two axles and an A-frame with a coupling device to the towing vehicle.

Sursa: arhiva personala
Inaltimea rulotelor se incadreaza in limitele 2.30 - 2.50 m.

Dimension vary quite a lot, from 3 meters up to 7.50 or even 8 meters length for the box. The width is between 2 and 2.50 meters, most caravans being 2.10 meters wide. The height is between 2.30 and 2.50 meters. The weight of a caravan varies a lot depending on the dimensions of the box and the equipments installed. Therefore, the maximum authorized mass (MAM) may vary between 750 kg and 2000 kg or even more for longer caravans.

2. A converted van is a light commercial vehicle transformed in a recreational vehicle by installing all the systems and furniture that you can find in a caravan, without altering the body of the vehicle. By cutting away nonstructural elements of the body you can create the needed gaps for windows, feeding or emptying points, ventilation grids and other necessary accessories.

Sursa: arhiva personala

Unlike the caravans, the converted vans have almost the same widths and heights (due to the standardization of the production line), the differences being made by lengths and MAM. Since most drivers own a B category driving licence, most converted vans have the MAM = 3500 kg.

3. Autorulota (sau camper-ul, cum mai este el cunoscut in Romania si in alte tari) reprezinta un RV, autopropulsat ca si van-ul amenajat, insa cu o suprastructura specifica, asemanatoare unei rulote.

3. The motorhome (also known in Romania and other countries as "camper") is a self-propelled RV, just like the converted van, but having a specially designed caravan-like structure.

www.caravansinternational.it

In motorhomes, the width and the height are also standardized, the difference being made by the total length and its MAM. There are several basic vehicles, but lately the most used platform is the one of Citroen/Fiat/Peugeot with the Jumper/Ducato/Partner models. Motorhomes are also made on Ford, Mercedes, Renault or Iveco structures, but in smaller quantities.

All three recreational vehicles categories have on the inside all the necessary living conditions, from two and up to six sleeping places, a bathroom, a kitchen and storage spaces. On the exterior, we find retractable awning, bicycle carrying systems, TV reception systems, solar panels, etc.

Spuneam la inceput ca fiecare grupa de RV-uri are avantaje si dezavantaje in utilizare.

Like I said, every category of RVs has its own advantages and disadvatanges. These may influence our buying decision. Every family has its own travelling styles and this is why I believe that before acquiring an RV we must take evrything into consideration.

Are we the kind of family who spends its holiday going to one place, the “base”, from where we go and visit around in one-day trips? Then the most suitable RV is the caravan, which we’ll leave on the campsite and move around in our cars.

Are we the kind of family who spends a day in one place, another day in another place and so on? Do we visit directly from our cars? Then our RV of choice will be a more mobile one, the motorhome.

Are we a family of only two who have many free weekends and who love to wonder on country roads, far away form the wild world? Then the vehicle I will check out more carefull will definitely be the converted van.

Cate persoane vor folosi in mod curent acel RV?

Once you have settled with your most suitable RV, the questions regarding its dimensions follow. How many persons will use that RV on a regular bases? How many persons will sleep in it and how many persons will travel inside it during the day (the latter part of this question is only available for converted vans and motorhomes, because people are NOT allowed to travel inside a caravan)? What specifications do I want? Do I need a satellite reception system, with an automatic positioning? Do I need an independent or main grid connected air conditioning system?

Also, you must know very well the budget you will need for a recreational vehicle having the desired options. Most of the times, people ask me this: “I would like to buy a caravan manufactured after 2000, with a water boiler, TV reception system and of a maximum price of 2000 euros. Can you help me?”

Many times, catalogs that contain everything we might install on our vehicle make our imagination run wild. But the reality of the available budget brings an adjustment of wishes or plan to fulfill them in time. It is true that in the end, a great part of the acquisition process is about the art of compromise: out of the things I want to buy, what will I let go of so I can fit in the budget and needs?

To give you an example, throughout the years I’ve learned not to compromise when it comes to the structure of the caravan. I have bought for some clients caravan and I have given advice to many others regarding the acquisition of a caravan. I haven’t accepted any compromises for any caravan in regard to its structure, because while a refridgerator or a heating system may be repaired at moderate costs, a structural repair takes a lot of time and money. I have repaired and I still repair structures that have been deteriorated mostly by water infiltration and I have had the opportunity to see how much damage can a water infiltration do to a caravan or a motorhome.

Think forward about everything that comes up in your mind, however weird they might seem. Look for answers to as many questions as possible before buying the RV you want. Don’t allow yourself to be charmed by the words of the seller, because his sole wish is to sell; for now, the money are still in your pocket. Look for information, ask for advise from others who have been through this buying process and who already know how to use a recreational vehicle.

Si evit sa-i privesc ochii, e prea multa dezamagire in ei.

Don’t refrain yourself from paying for a consulting session - you may always contact me for one, the cost of it being really moderate - because that humble amount of money may save you from many problems and frustrations later on. It always was and it still is painful for me to be called by a newly RV owner and see that he has been conned into paying a considerate amount of cash on something highly over evaluated, which now requires large sums of money for repairs; I always see the joy and pride with which they show me their vehicle and it brakes my heart to show them that they have been tricked... Sometimes I don’t even have the power to do it... I show them what needs to be done, how much time it would take to repair it, how much it costs and I let them decide to what extent he was fooled during purchase. I avoid looking in their eyes for there is too much disappointment that lies there.

I wish you all end up enjoying every day you spend alongside your loved ones, either in a caravan, a converted van or a motorhome!

Ceas fotovoltaic

Being passioned about everything involving renewable energies and taking advantage of the relative coolness of the beginning of the year and of the freezing winter, I started looking over the internet, searching for new information regarding solar panels, wind mills and many others of this sort. I found, and I also bought!, a watch with a solar cell.

Of course just that wasn't enough for me so I studied a little the history of this type of watches. Somewhere in the 70s, the Citizen watch company brought to the market the first watch powered with the help of a solar cell, due to the oil crisis: the Cryston Solar Cell.

Lucrurile au evoluat si, in 1990, Citizen prezinta un nou model, numit Eco-Drive:

Everything evolved and, in 1990, Citizen presents to the world a new model named Eco-Drive:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eco-Drive#mediaviewer/File:Citizen_Promaster_Eco-Drive_AP0440-14F_Diver%27s_200_m_on_a_4-ring_NATO_style_strap.JPG

Numerous models of watches emerge based upon this technology that transforms any kind of light into electric energy. They were wonderful watches, but presented a huge disadvantage: due to the still rather new technology, they were not affordable by everybody.

Until recently... Last year, the Q&Q Watches company, part of the Citizen Watch Co., launched a series of watches that use the Eco-Drive technology, but a lot more affordable: the Q&Q SmileSolar.

The SmileSolar is a maintance-free watch, that doesn't require any battery change and it supports a pressure of up to 5 Bar. The case is completely made out of recycled plastic and, thanks to combining the different styles of dials and colours there many posibilities of expressing every owner's character, as you can see in the picture below:

http://www.techfaster.com/qq-watches-40-solar-eco-drive-style-watch/

I loved this concept so much that I didn't hesitate. I chose the all-black model, the one I liked most. All-black is more a figure of speech because it has a few accents - the hour and minute indicator are white, while the seconds' indicator and the buckle thorn are yellow. Also, the exterior ring around the dial is sort of transparent. This one is, according to the documentation I found on the internet, the solar cell. What do you think of all this?

I found it an interesting thought of putting it next to my older watch (which has unfortunately suffered several scratches along the years), also a Q&Q, something like connecting the present to the past.

I wish I'll enjoy my new watch for many years to come, just as I still enjoy my older one. If more objects like this come into our lives, then there are chances that renewable energies truly become the solution to our growing hunger for electricity.

Cu drag de natura,

Deerly fond of nature,

Costin
